Johannesburg and Pretoria overview

Our Johannesburg and Pretoria overview tour is the best possible excursion for a good overall look at two cities so close to one another (65 kms) yet so totally different. Visit the highlights of this important economic region.

Start off in Johannesburg, or the “City of Gold” as it’s sometimes called, and discover South Africa’s largest city which remains the country’s financial and commercial heart. Our Johannesburg City Tour forms the base of this day trip, and will give you a taste of the “Rainbow Nation” at work in Sandton and downtown Johannesburg. The Northern suburbs can be viewed from our vantage point after which we drive into the bustling Hillbrow area, the most densely populated part of the city. Crossing over the Nelson Mandela Suspension Brige into downtown Johannesburg we stop to visit “The Top of the Carlton” for a panoramic view of Jozi. We also stop at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown where a variety of African arts, crafts, curios and souvenirs are sold.

The tour continues to Pretoria, where you will learn about the Boer war. Ride down the wide streets of South Africa’s Administrative Capital city, enjoying the beauty of the 75,000 odd Jacaranda trees that line your route, and bloom in Oct / Nov each year.

The tour takes you to:

  • The Voortrekker Monument – commemorating the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner;
  • Fort Schanskop – built at a cost of GBP 47,500 and handed over to the government on 6 April 1897;
  • Kruger House – a museum refurbished to look almost as it did at the time when President Paul & Mrs Gezina Kruger lived there;
  • Church Square – view the historic General Post Office, Palace of Justice and Raadsaal buildings as well as the statue of Paul Kruger;
  • Melrose House – an old Victorian mansion where the Peace Treaty with the British was signed;
  • The Union Buildings – considered one of the country’s finest architectural masterpieces with its beautiful gardens.
